How to Monetize Entertainment Blog?

In a previous post, I shared 7 proven ways to generate blogging revenue. All those 7 proven ways will work on every blog type. In this post, I am going to be specific and share how to monetize entertainment blog.

What is an Entertainment Blog?

What is life without entertainment? An ‘entertainment blog’ is anything that helps us to relax, that’s how I see it. It could be Hollywood gossips, collection of funny images, celeb life news, humorous jokes and so on. Such blogs usually display rich media content through HD images and video embeds.
Usually, entertainment blogs receive high traffic and as such, people assume that monetizing an entertainment blog is easy. Just place some ad codes in sidebar, header and between post content, and you’re done.

Okay, these strategies do work and if you've been following them, how much have you earned in the last 6 months? Perhaps, it was not as much as you would have wanted.

Therefore, let’s move on some ways to monetize entertainment blog.

4 Ad Types to Monetize Entertainment Blog

The trick is to make the entertainment blog ad-friendly. There are a lot of ways with which you can display ads on an entertainment blog. It all depends on how creative you’re to monetize content.

Usually, AdSense is the first destination to monetize entertainment blog but in the last couple of years, AdSense has become stricter and with strong rejection policies, bloggers are actively looking for AdSense alternatives.

While searching online for other advertising platforms, or rather alternate AdSense platforms, I stumbled upon Propeller Ads, and after going to through their variety ad formats and their media presence, I realized it would serve as a perfect example to write this post using them as a reference point.

Propeller Ads: A Brief Introduction

Propeller Ads has been in existence since 2011 and has a simple business model. It serves targeted ads on publisher websites and generates revenue for advertisers and shares a certain percentage of earning with the publishers.  They have come a long way and currently, they serve more than 650 million ad impressions per day!

Let’s move ahead and see the ad formats which should be employed to monetize entertainment blog.

1) Pop-Under Ads

Propeller Ads is the global leader in the pop-under ad format. It is a non-invasive ad format that appears as a ‘hidden’ window under the main page. The reader sees the new window when the main page is closed or minimized.

The format is rather aggressive. If your website content is of excellent quality and not more than one pop-under ad is used at a single time, the ad format will not impact user experience. If you still have inhibitions, you can set time delay for pop-under ads.

The pop-under format is also modifiable to site-under format, helping advertisers to gain better exposure. What happens is that whenever anything on the page is clicked, the pop-under ads come up.

For bloggers, this ad strategy gives lots of benefits. You can monetize mobile traffic, get paid for every visit, get higher CPM rates and effectively create additional ad spaces for the blog.

Here’s a demo link – click anywhere on the page that opens and you will notice the pop-under ads.

2) Dialog Ads (for Smartphones)

This is a very unique ad display idea. We all know that the importance of mobile-friendly websites and blogs is increasingly. Recently Google made an announcement that sites which are mobile-friendly will rank higher in search engines. From 21 April, Google algorithm will change (once again!) to make this possible and it will also give better search engine visibility to apps.
As such, bloggers are lining up to include mobile-friendly CSS to their blogs. Check into Google Analytic s and see the mobile traffic.

If your entertainment blog is receiving high percentage of mobile traffic, you should implement the dialog ads format. All you need to do is add the specific code into your blog’s HTML files. Propeller Ads will then show relevant ads to visitors as a ‘dialog box’ with clear CTA, inspiring better income potential.

Remember that you need to place ad slots specially designed for the mobile website. Since mobile site UI is different from desktop version, ads needs concise placement.

3) Direct Ad

The ‘direct ad’ format is a mix of affiliate link ads and banner ads. If you don’t want to spend time in modifying HTML files and if you’re looking for a quick way to lead visitors to advertiser sites, you should go for the direct ads option.

It’s simple. Like you promote an affiliate link using banners with texts like ‘Sign Up’, ‘Download’ and other CTA’s, you have to do the exact same thing here.

Propeller Ads will give you an ad link and you have to place it within the blog. It could be below posts, on the sidebar, in your email newsletters or anywhere.

Bloggers get a higher payout for sending high number of visitors to the advertiser’s direct link page.

4) Video Ads

Companies like Microsoft and Proctor & Gamble use video ads to get more customers. Since yours is an entertainment blog and you will undoubtedly embed videos into the content, you should use the video ads feature to monetize the blog.

Propeller Ads offer four video ad formats: pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll and pre-game. You don’t need to be the video creator to display the ads and neither do you need to be a tech geek to upload relevant codes.

To become eligible for video ads, you should have a minimum of 50,000 daily visitors, post only legal content and use a video player with third-party ad support.

Quite simply, you’re embedding videos created by others and Propeller Ads is inserting relevant ads within the video content to earn revenue for your blog.
